Police and students walk as one to promote ‘Unofficial’ safety

The event was part of the Champaign Community Coalition's "Walk As One" campaign, which in recent years has made an annual stop on campus. Students from campus fraternities and sororities, other student volunteers, university officials and police officers from the U. of I., Champaign and Urbana departments broke off into groups with a goal of knocking on 4,000 doors. SafeWalks gets more mobile-friendly with app coming soon

URBANA, Ill. — Getting home safely on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus is about to get easier as members of the Student Patrol program prepare to launch a SafeWalks mobile app. Students who download the app will have a very simple way to request a SafeWalks escort from their mobile phones. The request made through the mobile app will go to the Student Patrol office, and patrollers will be dispatched to the requester’s location. Deceased man found in Champaign County was U. of I. student

URBANA, Ill. — The Champaign County Coroner confirmed on Monday that a body found in Tolono Township several miles south of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus is that of Vicente Mundo, a student who was reported missing last week. Since first responding to the scene near 900N and 1000E in rural Champaign County on Saturday morning, the Champaign County Sheriff's Office has been treating the incident as a homicide. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Police are looking for a U. of I. student who was reported missing this week after he left an apartment to meet a friend. U. of I. Police are looking for Vicente Mundo, 20, of Champaign, who was reported missing on Jan. 27.
