Illinois Division of Public Safety and Illini Athletics announce new traffic patterns for 2026 football season

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The University of Illinois Division of Public Safety and the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) will implement a lot-specific traffic-routing system for the 2026 Illinois football season.

The new routes are designed to ease traffic as much as possible, but fans are encouraged to arrive earlier than usual and review their designated gameday parking route on the Illinois Football 2026 Parking Updates website in advance.

With season tickets sold out for the second consecutive year and record crowds expected at Gies Memorial Stadium, the updated traffic plan is designed to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and provide the most efficient access possible given the large crowds.

Fans can expect to see more officers directing traffic at intersections, vehicle restrictions on streets immediately surrounding the stadium and new color designations for parking lots in addition to the existing lot numbers.

Early arrival is especially encouraged for the first few games of the season and for events with increased traffic, such as Homecoming and Dads Day, to allow extra time to navigate the new traffic patterns and potential congestion. Drivers should also have their parking passes ready to present to officers at intersections.

Beginning three and a half hours before kickoff, drivers will be required to follow designated traffic routes based on their parking lot, including assigned lots and those available for gameday purchase. Those who do not follow the designated route will be redirected to the appropriate route for their lot.

Before traveling to campus, attendees should review their designated gameday parking route on the Illinois Football 2026 Parking Updates website and plan their route into Champaign-Urbana. With ongoing construction along major interstates in Champaign County, traffic conditions on Interstates 57, 72 and 74 are subject to change throughout the season.

Following the game, traffic patterns will initially operate in reverse. As pedestrian traffic clears from roads and intersections, additional routes will gradually reopen.

The new traffic patterns are the final phase of a three-year effort to enhance traffic flow, reduce congestion on streets surrounding Gies Memorial Stadium and improve access to gameday parking lots. These updates reflect Illinois Athletics’ and the Division of Public Safety’s continued efforts to improve the gameday experience.

MEDIA NOTE: Members of the media are invited to join representatives from the Division of Public Safety and DIA at noon Monday, Aug. 24, in Grange Grove for a brief media availability to discuss the new gameday traffic patterns and other public safety preparations for the 2026 football season.
