URBANA, Ill. – The University of Illinois Police Department is investigating an unattended death near the Alma Mater statue on campus. Preliminary information indicates there was no foul play involved, and the death is believed to be accidental.

UIPD officers were dispatched to the area of Green and Wright streets in Urbana at about 6:42 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, following reports of an unresponsive individual near the Alma Mater statue.

Upon arrival, officers located the individual, identified as 29-year-old Alex C. Rodriguez, on a concrete bench. Officers assessed Rodriguez and immediately requested emergency medical assistance. Rodriguez was not affiliated with the University of Illinois.

The Champaign County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene, where Rodriguez was pronounced dead. Preliminary observations revealed no signs of foul play, and an autopsy has been scheduled.

Based on the information available at the time of the call, there was no evidence of an ongoing threat to the campus community, and an Illini-Alert emergency notification was not issued.

UIPD and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office are investigating the circumstances surrounding Rodriguez’s death. Additional information will be released as appropriate and in accordance with the investigative process.
