CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – An Urbana man and a juvenile face preliminary charges following a late-night report of armed subjects at a campus residence hall.

Around 11:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7, UIPD officers were dispatched to Bousfield Hall, 1214 S. First St., Champaign, following reports of two individuals knocking on doors and threatening residents.

Officers promptly arrived on scene and began their investigation. The reporting person told officers that two individuals had entered the building, were acting strangely, knocking on doors and making vague threats about possessing firearms.

Out of an abundance of caution, an Illini-Alert emergency notification was issued to all students, faculty and staff while additional officers responded to the scene.

Officers established a perimeter around the building while Real-Time Information Center specialists reviewed security camera footage to locate the suspects.

RTIC specialists quickly located the suspects through video review and relayed their locations to responding officers, who detained both individuals shortly thereafter.

Officers searched both individuals, but no firearms were found.

The adult was identified as 20-year-old Davante Trass of Urbana. He was transported to the Champaign County Satellite Jail and preliminarily charged with making a terrorist threat and criminal trespass to state-supported land.

The juvenile was preliminarily charged with making a terrorist threat, criminal trespass to state-supported land and obstructing identification. The juvenile was released to their guardian in accordance with local screening protocols and state law.

Both individuals received letters of no trespass barring them from all University of Illinois property.

The investigation is ongoing. UIPD investigators and Real-Time Information Center specialists continue to review security camera footage from the area, and police are seeking evidence or information from witnesses that may assist with the investigation.
